Teachers inspire, support, and empower our children and young people every day.  World Teachers Day on October 31 is a chance to officially thank these wonderful educators.

Ahead of World Teachers Day, we had a chat with Meg Beaven about teaching at Carinity Education Shalom.

What drew you to work at Shalom?

What drew me to work at Shalom was the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young people.  Working with children is such a special privilege, and Shalom allows me to connect with students in meaningful ways every day.

I love my role as VET Coordinator, as it gives me the chance to help shape students’ futures by guiding them towards tertiary pathways, work experience, and career opportunities that suit their strengths and goals.

Being part of a community where every child is known, supported, and encouraged to reach their potential is something I deeply value.

What’s your favourite thing about teaching?

The rapport you can build with students and the way you can see them grow over their time in the classroom is my favourite part of teaching.  You get to be a part of their lives, and that’s very special.

What’s one memorable moment from your time in the classroom?

Recently, I placed 17 of our students on work experience — the largest cohort Shalom has ever had out in the community.  All of the students did so well, and I felt incredibly proud of them.  They were so brave to step out and learn about the workforce and discover what it’s like beyond school.

What’s a fun fact your students might not know about you?

Most of the students know that I coach and play roller derby, but not many know that I’ve competed internationally!

If you could describe your teaching style in three words, what would they be?

Togetherness, fun, passionate.
