Carinity Education Glendyne student Jack Baker enjoyed a trip to Melbourne to gain an insight into a career in engineering.
Jack, who is in Year 12, attended the Victorian Indigenous Engineering Winter School (VIEWS).
The week-long program, offered by The University of Melbourne, RMIT University, Swinburne University and Monash University, is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Years 10-12 from anywhere in Australia.
Students get to experience first-hand the work of engineers, meet Indigenous engineering professionals, discover pathways into engineering, and explore the four university campuses.
Despite initially being quite hesitant and anxious to travel to Melbourne on his own for the event, Jack jumped at the opportunity and had a great time.
Jack shared that while changing planes in Brisbane was quite scary, he really began to enjoy himself once he arrived in Melbourne.
He stayed on campus at a Melbourne university, in an old historic room with the best views of the city, and enjoyed a week of seeing what life at university might be like.
Jack also learned more about courses in engineering, spoke with various employers, and got to use cutting-edge equipment.
This included using the 3D printing lab, playing with robotics, and getting to go in flight simulator and race car simulators.
Jack strongly recommends the experience to any upcoming Indigenous student who may be considering engineering.
“Doing this has changed my mind on its value,” he said.
